“Prompt engineering” sounds technical, but it really means: how to ask clearly so the AI gives useful answers. No special skills required — just structure.

Prompt engineering is how you communicate with AI tools. Clear role, context, task, format, and examples dramatically improve results — without changing the model itself.

Zero-shot prompting means asking directly, with no examples — 'Translate good morning into Shona', 'Summarise this paragraph in three sentences.' It works well when the task is common and your instructions are specific, because the model has seen thousands of similar requests during training. The skill is in the specificity: 'write about pollution' invites a generic essay, while 'list four causes of water pollution in rural areas, one sentence each, for a Form 2 reader' gets exactly that. Zero-shot should be your default first attempt — it costs the fewest tokens and often just works — and its failures tell you precisely what the prompt was missing, which sets up the stronger techniques.

Deep dive 1Compare a vague prompt with a useful one
“Help me study biology” leaves the tool guessing about topic, level, and goal. “Create five Form 4 questions on cell division, then wait for my answers and explain only my mistakes” gives it a clear tutoring job. The second prompt also protects learning because it asks for practice rather than a copied assignment.
Deep dive 2Examples teach a pattern quickly
If you want notes turned into flashcards, show two examples of the question-and-answer style you want. The model can copy that pattern within the current chat without being permanently retrained. Check the new cards anyway, because a good-looking format can still contain a wrong fact.
Deep dive 3Chain the task when one prompt is not enough
Big tasks work better as a sequence of small prompts. To prepare a debate on solar power, first ask for the five strongest arguments for, then the five strongest against, then ask the model to attack your own chosen argument so you can practise defending it. Each step is easy to check before the next begins, and a mistake in step one cannot silently poison the whole output the way it might in one giant request. This 'decompose, then chain' habit is exactly how professional prompt engineers approach complex work.
Deep dive 4When the answer is wrong, debug the prompt like code
A disappointing answer is information. Was the instruction ambiguous? Was context missing? Did you ask two questions at once? Change one thing and retry: add the audience, specify the format, or paste the exact paragraph the answer should be based on. If the model keeps inventing facts, constrain it — 'answer only from the text I pasted; say NOT FOUND if the text does not contain the answer'. Treating failures as debuggable, rather than concluding 'AI is useless' or 'AI is magic', is the mindset that separates skilled users from frustrated ones.

Few-shot prompts include examples. Role prompts set tone. Both are easier when you write for a real classmate, not a vague “AI god”.
