This matters because an attractive draft can contain factual errors or activities that cannot fit a real 40-minute lesson. For example, you will cut an overfull AI lesson into core learning, extension work, and homework.

Define clear learning objectives before you touch any AI tool, because the objective is the quality standard everything else will be measured against. A learning objective states what students should be able to do after the lesson, in observable terms: 'calculate the area of composite shapes', 'explain why the rainy season varies across regions', 'compare two characters' motivations using evidence from the text'. The craft is in the verbs — 'explain', 'calculate', 'compare' describe performances you can actually check, while 'understand' and 'know' describe invisible mental states that neither you nor any assessment can observe directly. This is not pedantry: a vague objective produces a vague lesson from a human planner and an even vaguer one from an AI, because the machine amplifies whatever precision or fuzziness you feed it.

A useful lesson prompt begins with what learners must demonstrate, not with “make this fun.” For a 40-minute Form 2 science lesson, ask for a short retrieval task, guided practice, and an exit ticket aligned to one observable objective.
Deep dive 2Differentiate without lowering the goal
AI can draft sentence starters, vocabulary support, or extension questions around a shared outcome. Review each version so learners receive an appropriate challenge rather than a simplified worksheet that removes the thinking.
Deep dive 3Worked example: one objective, one complete prompt
Compare two prompts for the same lesson. Weak: 'Make a fun lesson about fractions.' Strong: 'Plan a 40-minute lesson for 45 Form 1 learners on adding fractions with different denominators. By the end, learners can add two fractions with denominators up to 12 and explain the common-denominator step. Resources: chalkboard and exercise books only. Include a 5-minute starter retrieving equivalent fractions, one worked example I can model, ten practice questions increasing in difficulty, and a 3-question exit ticket aligned to the objective. Use money and food-sharing examples familiar in Zimbabwe.' The strong prompt embeds objective, constraints, sequence, and context — so the draft arrives already shaped like a real lesson, and editing takes minutes instead of a rewrite.
Deep dive 4Keep the instructional sequence yours
Generated lessons often default to a generic recipe: video hook, group discussion, poster activity. Your class may need retrieval practice first because the topic builds on shaky prior knowledge, or direct instruction before any group work because the concept is new. Decide the sequence yourself — starter, modelling, guided practice, independent practice, closure, or whatever your school's framework prescribes — and ask the AI to fill your structure rather than invent its own. The pedagogy stays with the professional; the tool supplies materials to your specification.
